Christmas is the best time of the year, and is filled with family traditions.
Now that you are married, it’s the perfect time to make new traditions together! Of course, you will probably have traditions that come from each side of your families to include; but it’s so fun to make your own holiday traditions, too!
Here are ten awesome ideas to get you started on creating your own Christmas traditions as newlyweds:
Everyone loves to get Christmas cards in the mail, and this year is the perfect time to send out your own Christmas cards. You can send a wedding picture in the cards—or even put one directly on the card. My personal favorites have a cute pun like “A Very Married Christmas” or “Married and Bright” with a wedding picture. Etsy has some precious ones!
Grab a cup of hot chocolate and drive around looking at Christmas lights. It’s even more fun to look at the Christmas lights in your pajamas—Christmas themed, of course.
Ornaments symbolize memories! My husband and I have a tradition we started while we were engaged of buying an ornament when we travel. It’s fun to remember past vacations and mini trips that we have taken together. We also get an ornament to celebrate new milestones. Such as when we adopted our rescue dog and when we bought a house together.
Will you get a fake tree or a real tree? Maybe there is a Christmas Tree Farm where you can go cut down your own tree. Going to pick out the perfect Christmas tree is a fun tradition to enjoy with each other! If you’re not into a real tree, go buy an artificial one together. Make sure you decorate the Christmas tree together—make a fun holiday treat to eat while decorating. Food. Always include food to get him to help you decorate!
Did you get a new pair of pajamas on Christmas Eve growing up? I feel like a ton of people have this same tradition. When my sister got married, we forgot to tell her new husband of ten days, that he needed to get her Christmas pajamas each year! Christmas was almost ruined for her. Whoops! Of course, he will never forget to buy her Christmas pajamas now! Make this tradition cuter, and find matching or color coordinated pajamas to wear together on Christmas Eve!
Invite your friends over for a Christmas party! You received some cute stuff from your registry, and you’ve started to build a home together. Now is the perfect time to break out the festive platters and use some stuff to entertain with gifts from your registry! Show off your new home to your family and friends for a Christmas party—Tacky Sweater style!
Don’t forget about the reason for the season—the birth of our Savior. On Christmas Eve, read the story of Jesus’ birth from the Bible. Some churches have a live nativity that you can drive through.
Tree lighting or a Christmas Parade
Every small town has a Christmas Parade or a night where they light the Christmas tree. Grab a Gingerbread Latte and watch the magic of Christmas unfold in a small child’s eyes.
Angel Tree or Operation Shoe Box
Give back this Christmas and shop for Operation Shoe Box or pick a child’s name from the Angel Tree. This is a wonderful way to give back, and help a child in need. I believe that helping a child have a Christmas to remember might just make it the best Christmas ever for both of you.
A crackling fire in the background while watching a classic Christmas movie is the perfect date night at home! You could bake your favorite Christmas cookies or snack together before the movie starts.
This Christmas, start new traditions together. Christmas traditions are what makes the holidays so magical and memorable! What traditions will you start this holiday season?
